Here in Southern California, we’ve always got something to do. You’re only limited by your imagination when choosing how to spend an afternoon in Orange County.
Take advantage of being at the epicenter of entertainment when your family has their next free weekend. After all, there is no other place in the country with as many amusement parks at your fingertips.
Embarking on a family adventure filled with joy, laughter, and excitement is every parent's wish, isn't it? Luckily, Orange County boasts a treasure trove of amusement and theme parks that promise an unforgettable experience for families of all sizes.
Disneyland Resort: A World of Magic
Let's start with the obvious.
The crown jewel of family entertainment, the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim. It's where dreams come true and where magic happens every day. With two theme parks, Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park, there's something for everyone.
Disneyland Park: From iconic rides like Space Mountain to meeting beloved characters wandering the park, there's an enchanting world waiting behind Sleeping Beauty Castle.
Disney California Adventure Park: Step into the world of Pixar, Marvel superheroes, and even Radiator Springs at Cars Land. Don't miss the breathtaking World of Color nighttime show!
But, these days, Disneyland adventures can take quite a bit of planning and investment for a family to attend, so we highly recommend booking reservations in advance and looking out for discounts when possible to make things more palatable.
Once you’re there, it’s worth every penny. I’ve never met anyone who regrets going to Disneyland.
Knott's Berry Farm: A Perfect Blend of Thrills and Tradition
Though it may not receive the national acclaim of Disneyland, our family grew up going to the “neighborhood” theme park almost twice as often.
Nestled in Buena Park, Knott's Berry Farm offers an incredible mix of thrilling rides and a charming Old West atmosphere. It's a perfect destination for families seeking excitement and nostalgia. The park has far less traffic, prices are more affordable, and it’s grown so much over the last decade to become quite the premier theme park in California.
Thrill-seekers' Paradise: HangTime, GhostRider, and the high-speed Xcelerator will leave even the bravest of hearts racing!
Family-Friendly Fun: Camp Snoopy is a haven for younger adventurers with its delightful rides and attractions.
And we certainly can’t finish up a discussion about Knott’s without mentioning Knott’s Scary Farm. Every year for about a month and a half before Halloween, the entire park transforms at night into a gigantic labyrinth of haunted mazes, ghost towns, and sinister shows.
It’s absolutely unlike anything else you’ve experienced during Halloween and a must visit.
Legoland California Resort: Where Imagination Takes Shape
I raised a Lego kid so you better believe that I’ve taken a trip to this next park further south.
Imagine a place where creativity and fun collide—welcome to Legoland in Carlsbad! This Lego-themed wonderland is a haven for families with young children. It’s a Lego fan’s dream with all sorts of build areas, themed roller coasters, and stunning displays made for a memorable afternoon.
Interactive Adventures: Kids can unleash their creativity at Build & Test, explore Miniland USA, and even earn their Lego driver's license at Driving School.
Thrilling Rides: Don't miss out on Lego Ninjago - The Ride or take a spin on the Dragon Coaster for a family-friendly adrenaline rush.
We highly recommend Legoland for families with kids under 12. We found that there was the most for children that ago to do while we visited for the day.
Universal Studios Hollywood: Lights, Camera, Action!
Venture a bit farther to Universal Studios Hollywood for a behind-the-scenes peek into the magic of movies and heart-pounding rides.
Movie Magic: Hop on the Studio Tour for an insider's look at famous film sets and jaw-dropping special effects.
Thrilling Adventures: Brave Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, or experience the immersive Transformers: The Ride 3D.
SeaWorld San Diego: A Marine Adventure
Though a bit of a drive from Orange County, SeaWorld in San Diego is a marine wonderland offering encounters with sea creatures and thrilling rides.
Marine Encounters: Interact with dolphins, marvel at the grace of orcas, and witness the playful antics of sea lions.
Splashy Fun: Experience the excitement of rides like Manta and Journey to Atlantis for a refreshing break from the ocean's wonders.
Don't Miss These Hidden Gems!
Adventure City: An intimate amusement park in Anaheim, perfect for younger kids with its delightful array of rides.
Pacific Park: Nestled on the Santa Monica Pier, this park offers classic rides and stunning oceanfront views.
