I will never forget the first time I heard the phrase “garage sailing” — you can’t imagine the crazy images that came to mind. Secondhand sales in private yards aren’t popular in Poland; people prefer selling at centrally located flea markets.
Naturally, I was intrigued once I learned more about garage sales (and the idea of going to multiple in one day). So, I went looking for more information.
When did garage sales start?
It turns out that as early as the 19th century, people were looking for a good bargain! Garage sales (originally known as rummage sales) date back to the early 1800s and were organized mainly by churches, charities and community groups as fundraisers.
After World War II, families started moving out of cities, and garage sales, as we know them today, emerged. They became more mainstream over the decades but really boomed in the 1970s and 1980s. Actually, this is when neighborhoods began holding community-wide sales to get more buyers.
Today, online platforms have changed how we buy and sell pre-owned items, but those who favor in-person connections still favor a good, old-fashioned garage sale.
Your unwanted items are someone else’s treasure
Signs of Spring are all around, which can only mean one thing — our community-wide garage sales are coming! I love bringing Cypress locals together for these sales because they are a great way to:
- Re-connect with neighbors
- Declutter your space
- Get ready for a move
- Earn extra cash
Not to mention, our community garage sales are less stressful than doing it yourself. We handle the signage, promotion and permits. All you need to do is open your garage and turn it into a fun-filled day of sales. Plus, we sweeten the deal by providing donuts!
